Coimbatore: Due to restricted inventory of Covaxin doses, beneficiaries within the age group of 15 to 18 years within the district are discovering it troublesome to get their second jab.
The department of public well being had launched vaccination drive for the beneficiaries on January 3. As per the Union well being ministry pointers, the second dose of Covaxin needs to be administered in 4 to 6 weeks from the date of the primary dose.
Several college students go to Periyanaickenpalayam Government Hospital each day to know whether or not Covaxin shares have arrived, stated chief medical officer Dr S Seralathan. “Supply was regular until a few days after the vaccination drive for the 15-18 age group started. We raised the issue during the review meetings with health department officials,” he informed TOI. “As many as 900 students are yet to receive their second dose in the Periyanaickenpalayam region alone.”
However, the deputy director of well being providers Dr P Aruna refuted experiences about vaccine scarcity. “We are supplying Covaxin doses to all health centres. Supply came down a few weeks ago, but it has been streamlined,” she said.
The district has 21,000 Covaxin doses and 1.12 lakh covishield doses as of Wednesday morning, a health department official said. “The district received a fresh consignment of 11,000 Covaxin doses on Monday, which shall be distributed to health centres,” he stated.
Of the 1.61 lakh beneficiaries within the 15-18 age class within the district, 1.27 lakh folks have acquired the primary dose and 80,589 the second dose.
