An avalanche sparked by the collapse of the most important glacier within the Italian Alps killed no less than 5 folks and injured eight others on Sunday, an emergency companies spokeswoman stated.

Two of the injured have been taken to hospital in Belluno, one other in a extra critical situation was taken to Trevise and 5 to Trente, she stated.

Canova didn’t specify the nationalities of the victims.

Helicopters have been scrambled to participate within the rescue operation and to observe the state of affairs from the air.

“An avalanche of snow, ice and rock hit an access path at a time when there were several roped parties, some of whom were swept away,” Canova stated. “The total number of climbers involved is not yet known,” she added.

The Marmolada glacier is the most important glacier within the Dolomites, which is a part of the Italian Alps and located on the northern face of Marmolada.

The glacier feeds the Avisio river and over seems Lake Fedaia.
